Everyone knows it.But strangely enough, only a few people consciously choose to live in the present every day.The future can provide hope, and the past can provide closure but focusing on either one obsessively, however, quickly becomes deteriorating to your mental and emotional health.What you exchange even an hour of your day for matters in life.Charles Darwin once said, A man who dares to waste an hour of time has bedrngnis discovered the value of his life.You can be busy all your life without ever doing something meaningful.Your ability to appreciate life can never be taken from you, so beware of the distractions of life and purposefully use your time wisely.In her collection of short essay s,The Writing Life,Annie Dillard explainsHow we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing. A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. Meanwhile death will arrive, and you have no choice in making yourself available for that.In the popular book,On The Shortness Of Life,a 2,000-year-old masterpiece by Seneca, Roman stoic philosopher and teacher to the emperors, he writes about time and how to best use it to ensure you lead a long and fulfilling life.Seneca wrote his 20-sections On the Shortness of Life in 49 CE, the year he returned to Rome from his exile in Corsica, as a moral essay addressed to his friend Paulinus.He argues in the book that it isnt really the case that human life is short, but rather that most people waste a lot of it. Seneca continues by telling us that we n ot only refuse to accept our limited time but that we waste away what little time we do possess.The philosopher declares that we shackle ourselves to our labours, our professions.He shares a lot on how to appreciate life - and how to use it.If you havent read it yet, go get it now.Its one of the most important books you will ever read about using the limited time you have on earth and living a meaningful life.Its the most definite call to action to live a fulfilling life.Seneca believed that if we use our lives properly they are long enough.The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today. The whole future lies in uncertainty live immediately.Seneca writesIt is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested. But when it is wasted in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity, we are f orced at last by deaths final constraint to realize that it has passed away before we knew it was passing. So it is we are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not ill-supplied but wasteful of it Life is long if you know how to use it.Seneca cautions that we fail to treat time as a valuable resource. He offers this advice for those who feel like they are wasting time.You are living as if destined to live for ever your own frailty never occurs to you you dont notice how much time has already passed, but squander it as though you had a full and overflowing supply - though all the while that very day which you are devoting to somebody or something may be your last. You act like mortals in all that you fear, and like immortals in all that you desire How late it is to begin really to live just when life must end How stupid to forget our mortality, and put off sensible plans to our fiftieth and sixtieth years, aiming to begin life from a point at which few have arrived From Seneca I have learned to be live in the present, and on purpose.Carpe diem or seize the day, in everything you choose to do.The phrase was first uttered by the Roman poet Horace over 2,000 years ago.The message of carpe diem matters more than ever today.For anyone who is deeply worried about the future, Seneca advisesEveryone hustles his life along and is troubled by a longing for the future and weariness of the present. But the man who organizes every day as though it were his last, neither longs for nor fears the next day Nothing can be taken from this life, and you can only add to it as if giving to a man who is already full and satisfied food which he does not want but can hold. So you must not think a man has lived long because he has white hair and wrinkles he has not lived long, just existed long. For suppose you should think that a man had had a long voyage who had been caught in a raging storm as he left the harbor, and carried hither and thither and driven round and r ound in a circle by the rage of opposing winds? He did not have a long voyage, just a long tossing about.Life is long if you know how to use it.On the Shortness of Lifehas become one of my favorite essays on life and living it. Its an insightful commentary on human existence.Life isnt short if you live it to the fullest.Closing thoughtsLife can be short or long depending upon how you decide to live it. Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX in Hawthorne, Calif., is recognized for outstanding leadership in innovation for space commercialization; for technical contributions to the design of reusable rockets; and for dedication to the promotion of STEM education. Ms. Shotwell joined SpaceX in 2002 as vice president of business development and built the Falcon vehicle family manifest to more than 70 launches, representing more than $10 billion in business. In her current position since 2008, Ms. Shotwell is responsible for day-to-day operations and for managing customer and strategic relations. She is also a member of the SpaceX board of directors. SpaceX supports local science, technology, engineering and math programs as well as national engineering programs and competitions. Ms. Shotwell has helped raise more than $1.4 million for STEM education programs that reach thousands of students nationwide. Prior to joining SpaceX, Ms. Shotwell spent more than 10 years at The Aerospace Corporation in Segundo, Calif., before serving as director of Microcosm Inc.s Space Systems Division in Torrance, Calif. Ms. Shotwell is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and received AIAAs 2018 Goddard Astronautics Award. Among her other honors, she was appointed to the Export-Import Bank of the United States Advisory Committee and the Federal Aviation Administrations Management Advisory Council in 2014, and was inducted into the Women in Technology Internationals Hall of Fame in 2012. Vegetable-eating negotiation. Sibling conflict management. You were a babysitter- but not just any babysitter: You were a professional. You were trained in child CPR, had perfected the stern babysitter voice, and knew how to make grilled cheese (with the crusts cut off, of course) like a boss! You worked purely off referrals because you were that good. No, there was no flyer posting for you, my friend. Though you were probably jealous of your friends with the cool jobs (like serving as a lifeguard at the local pool), you learned a lot during your years of looking after other people's kids. And, guess what? Some of what youâve learned youâre applying to your current career, and you donât even know it. Here are four not-so-obvious career lessons from your teenage babysitting jobs. 1. Tending to Toddler Tantrums Taught You How to Deal With Clients Oh the terrible twos, and threes, and fours! As a babysitter, you were no stranger to dealing with full-blown meltdowns- including screaming bloody murder and rolling around on the floor, kicking and flailing in fits of rage. Where these pint-sized children got all that anger, weâll never know. But when the little ones went all Exorcist on you, you knew that you just had to let it happen. As long as they didnât hit their head whipping back during their most dramatic portrayals of toddler angst or punch their sibling in the process, you let them do their thing until they calmed down. Sadly, not everyone outgrows throwing fits, as angry and complaining clients may remind you all too often. But you know that sometimes adults need to let off a little steam too. So you listen intently and let them vent. This gives them space to process their frustration and also feel cared for and heard, which diffuses the situation so you can move forward to a solution. Who knew toddler tantrums could teach you so much? 2. Bargaining With Tenacious Tots Taught You How to Handle Tough Negotiations Remember trying to barter with a four-year-old? âYes, you do need to wear pants when you go outside. Please, put your pants on. Please, put on your pants. Okay, okay, if you put on your pants, I'll let you have some ice cream after dinner. With chocolate sauce. And sprinkles. Whatever. As long as you put on your pants.â Sure, this may have been more bribery than anything else, but it had all the elements of negotiation. You gave a little, you took a little, and everyone ended up happy- and clothed- in the end. You canât force anyone to do anything (not even the anti-pants toddler). You have to work to get what you need and want. Whether youâre asking for a better salary, a promotion, or a buy-in on your latest project, negotiating skills are essential. Thankfully, the debates and discussions you had with those difficult children equipped you with the skills to create win-win scenarios in work and business. 3. Mediating Familial Fights Taught You How to Handle Employee Conflicts If you worked in a multi-child home, sometimes the siblings would fight. And when I say sometimes, I mean every. single. day. You learned that even the most minor misunderstandings could escalate quickly. âHe breathed on me!â could launch the household into World War III. So you separated the parties involved, listened to both sides of the issue, led an airing of grievances that brought everyone to a mutual understanding, and then got on with the day. Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. People bring different values and opinions to the office, so there is bound to be some friction. You may not realize it, but moderating bouts of sibling rivalry gave you the hands-on experience to efficiently resolve conflict. So, whether you are in the thick of the conflict yourself or notice a heated debate a few cubicles down, you know how to establish common ground by focusing everyone involved on why theyâre there (hint: to do a great job). 4. Cleaning Up the Chaos Taught You to Be Accountable Itâs 9 PM. The kids are finally in bed, and youâre able to breathe a sigh of relief- until you realize it looks like a bomb went off. There are Lego landmines, bowls are crusted with mac and cheese, and someone put lipstick on the dog! You know the parents will be home in a couple of hours, so you begrudgingly get to work, cleaning up the epic mess the rugrats left in their wake. Just like you cleaned up after those kids, you may have noticed that as a professional, youâll need to correct otherâs mistakes- whether itâs proofreading documents or apologizing on behalf of the company. Even though you might not be the one responsible for certain errors, you take accountability because you know that is the right, mature, and professional thing to do. And if you are responsible for the mistakes? You own up to it and fix them. Being accountable enhances your professional reputation and othersâ trust in you. No, you probably donât want to go back to those teenage days- but you have to admit that your adventures in babysitting gave you a really great foundation for your career.
